Mexitil Common use

Mexitil is a Mexiletine hydrochloride. The medication is used to treat ventricular arrhythmias, such as sustained ventricular tachycardia. Mexitil blocks sodium channels in membranes of cardiomyocytes. It is effective to treat ventricular arrhythmias.

Mexitil Dosage and direction

Take this drug with a full glass of water. Intake with food or an antacid can lessen stomach upset.

Mexitil Precautions

Carefulness is needed in patients with myasthenia, epilepsy, mental illness, liver or kidney failure, AV block (II-III degree). Inform your doctor if you are pregnant or breastfeeding. Do not stop or decrease the dose prescribed to you as you may make your condition worse. This medication may affect your ability to high concentration of attention, make you dizzy, drowsy, or blur your vision. Be careful when you drive or operate machinery. Patients with liver impairment need correction of the dose.

Mexitil Contraindications

Mexitil cannot be used in patients with hypersensitivity to the medication or its components, bradycardia, hypotension, cardiogenic shock, Parkinson's disease, in pregnant or breastfeeding women.

Mexitil Possible side effect

Immediate medical help is needed if you experience severe symptoms of allergy (hives, skin rash, facial swelling, difficulty breathing). Other serious adverse reactions which you should inform your doctor are: a new or a worsening irregular heartbeat pattern, unusual bruising or bleeding, chest discomfort, wheezing, coughing, chest pain, infection and fever symptoms.

Mexitil Drug interaction

Mexitil increses toxicity of lidocaine. Quinidine, beta-blockers and amiodarone increase antiarrhythmic effect of the medication. Mexitil also increases blood levels of theophylline. Rifampin and phenytoin accelerate metabolism and reduce serum concentrations of Mexitil. Stimulants intestinal motility, antacids, narcotic analgesics, sedative drugs, anticholinergic drugs, (also ganglion blocking agents), H2-blockers of histamine receptors reduce absorption of Mexitil while metoclopramide increases it. Sodium bicarbonate, diuretics, which make urine more alkaline, reduce excretion of Mexitil.

Mexitil Missed dose

If you forgot to take your dose in time, please do it as soon as you remember. But do not take if it is too late or almost time for your next dose.

Mexitil Overdose

Overdose symptoms may be as follows: nausea, tiredness, dizziness, a loss of consciousness, seizures, numbness or tingling, and a worsening irregular heartbeat, drop in blood pressure, bradycardia, impairment of conduction, paresthesia (numbness or tingling on the skin), seizures, dysarthria (a motor speech disorder), diplopia (double vision), nystagmus (involuntary eye movement). Contact your doctor or pharmacist immediately if you have the symptoms listed in this section.
