Carafate Common use

Carafate is a drug to protect stomach and surface of ulcers from destructive activity of acid, pepsin and bile. Its main component Sucralfate dissolves in the acidic medium and forms a sticky paste-like polymer that has alkaline properties. Its interaction with the unaltered mucous membrane is insignificant. Action of Carafate continues for 6 hours. The medication is used to treat stomach and duodenal ulcers, ulcers caused by NSAID or stress, hyperacid gastritis, reflux esophagitis, reflux gastritis, gastroduodenitis, heartburn.

Carafate Dosage and direction

Take the medication orally on an empty stomach one hour before a meal and before bedtime. Do not chew the tablets, swallow them whole. For treatment of ulcerations Carafate is taken four times daily and twice daily for preventing ulcers. Strictly follow all recommendations of your physician.

Carafate Precautions

If you are treated with antacids to relieve pain, take it within one-half hour before or after intake of Carafate. In patients with renal insufficiency blood concentrations of Al3+ as it causes a toxic effect which signs are sleepiness and seizures. Short-term treatment can result in a scarring ulcers, but does not alter the frequency and severity of recurrences of ulcer disease after scarring.

Carafate Contraindications

This medication cannot be used in patients with hypersensitivity to the components of the drug, dysphagia, gastrointestinal tract obstruction, serious renal impairments, gastrointestinal bleeding, and also in cases of pregnancy and lactation.

Carafate Possible side effects

The most common side effects of Carafate are constipation, pain in stomach and lumbar area, diarrhea, nausea, dry mouth, drowsiness, dizziness, headache, skin itching, rash, urticaria. Only your doctor is able to decide if it is safe for you to continue treatment by Carafate if you have serious side effects.

Carafate Drug interactions

Antacids decrease effectiveness of Carafate. If co-administration is needed antacids should be taken 30 minutes before or 30 minutes after taking Carafate). Carafate reduces absorption of tetracyclines, cimetidine (Tagamet), ranitidine (Zantac), ciprofloxacin (Cipro), norfloxacin (Noroxin), ofloxacin (Floxin), lomefloxacin (Maxaquin), digoxin (Lanoxin), indirect anticoagulants and theophylline (Theo-Dur, Uniphyl, others); the interval between their intake should be at least 2 hours.

Carafate Missed dose

If you forgot to take your dose in time, please do it as soon as you remember. But do not take if it is too late or almost time for your next dose. Do not increase your recommended dose. Take your doses at about the same time each day to avoid missing a dose.

Carafate Overdose

Risk of overdose with Carafate is not a big one but any drug taken in an excessive quantity is dangerous. Though if you suppose that took too much of this medication seek medical attention immediately.

Store at room temperature away from moisture, sunlight, kids and pets in a tight container.
